Heavy Rain and Landslide Warnings Issued for Southern and Lower Northern Regions

Bangkok: The Center for Flood, Storm and Landslide Relief Operations has issued a warning for the southern and lower northern regions of Thailand, urging residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential landslides. The Royal Irrigation Department has increased water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam, while the Ministry of Transport reports that road repairs are nearly complete. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesman for the relief operations center, noted that weather conditions remain unstable, with the northern and northeastern regions experiencing colder temperatures as winter approaches. Meanwhile, the southern and central regions are on alert for heavy rain. The tropical storm 'Chami' is expected to change direction towards the Philippine Islands, potentially impacting Vietnam later this week, which could result in heavy rainfall and strong winds in several Thai provinces. Mr. Jirayu highlighted that the southern regions at risk include Sa tun, Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, and Ranong, where landslides and flash floods are a concern. In the lower northern regions, including Tak and Kamphaeng Phet, the Department of Mineral Resources is collaborating with volunteer networks to monitor rainfall and warn at-risk areas. The Royal Irrigation Department has adjusted water discharge rates at the Chao Phraya Dam to manage rising water levels, which have increased by 10-20 centimeters in low-lying areas outside embankments. Officials have been dispatched to inform residents downstream, and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued warnings for 10 provinces, including Bangkok, to monitor the Chao Phraya River's rising levels. Road repairs following floods and landslides are nearing completion, with significant progress reported in areas such as Sukhothai and Yala. Temporary solutions such as Bailey bridges have been installed to facilitate transportation, and discussions with community leaders are ongoing to address remaining travel disruptions. The Forward Command Center is preparing to transition Phase 1 rehabilitation areas to local agencies. Deputy Minister of Defense General Nattapol Nakphanit and Deputy Minister of Interior Ms. Thirat Samretwanit have visited Chiang Rai Province to oversee rehabilitation efforts and ensure compensation reaches victims. Plans for Phase 2 restoration are being finalized, with a focus on continuing support for affected communities.
