Grocery Store Owner Attacked by Knife-Wielding Man in Buriram

Buriram: A shocking incident unfolded in the Ko Wan Subdistrict, Lahan Sai District, when a man wielding a long-handled hook knife attacked a grocery store owner and his wife. The suspect, identified as Mr. Nattawut or Aem, was apprehended six days after the incident, which took place on the evening of January 10. During the attack, Mr. Udon, the 64-year-old store owner, sustained a cut on his mouth requiring five stitches, along with bruises on his body. His wife, Ms. Parichat, also suffered abrasions while trying to fend off the attacker using a ladle.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning the delay in the arrest of Mr. Nattawut despite a complaint being filed immediately after the attack. Law enforcement officials explained that the delay was due to the need for a court warrant. Upon his arrest, Mr. Nattawut confessed to the attack, attributing his actions to being under the influence of methamphetamine. He expressed remorse and offered to make amends in any way possible, while his mother claimed that he suffered from mental illness and was scheduled for a medical appointment.

The police have charged Mr. Nattawut with causing physical harm, carrying a weapon without just cause, and illegal drug use. Meanwhile, Mr. Udon, who has since reopened his store, expressed relief at the arrest but remains concerned about future incidents. He refuted claims made by the attacker about threats to his mother, suggesting they were drug-induced hallucinations. Mr. Udon urged for Mr. Nattawut to receive treatment for drug addiction to prevent further incidents.
