Governor Sembe’s Journey to Director-General of Provincial Administration

Bangkok: Looking at the history of "Governor Sembe" to become the Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, Mr. Nirat Phongsitthaworn has held various significant positions in the government. He began his career as the provincial governor in Bueng Kan and Udon Thani, eventually becoming the deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior. His tenure as the governor of Chiang Mai was marked by notable accomplishments, leading to his current appointment as the director-general of the Department of Provincial Administration under the Pheu Thai Party government. This period is characterized by political uncertainty, where addressing people's problems is of utmost priority.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nirat's achievements as the governor of Chiang Mai included addressing the forest fire and smog issues by implementing policies to reduce stubble burning. This initiative significantly decreased the toxic dust levels in the region. He also tackled the flood crisis by introducing a policy to dredge the Ping River, aiming for a long-term resolution. Additionally, he launched the 'Chiang Mai Model' to combat drug problems, focusing on integrated governance and collaboration among various agencies, including border soldiers and police.

Mr. Nirat is an alumnus of Vajiravudh College and the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University, sharing an academic background with Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. In terms of seniority within the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Nirat stands out. He is the most senior among his peers, with his retirement set for 2032, outlasting others like Mr. Kraisorn Kongchalad and Mr. Somkid Chanthamruek, who retire in 2025, and Mr. Chaiwat Chuenkosum, the governor of Nakhon Ratchasima, who was previously the director-general of the Community Development Department. Thus, Mr. Nirat's extensive experience and seniority make him a fitting choice for his current role.
