Government Whip Urged to Prioritize People’s Version of Amnesty Bill

Bangkok: The Government Whip has received a letter advocating for the inclusion of Section 112 cases in the People's Amnesty Bill, emphasizing the need for non-discriminatory legislation. Ms. Chanok Chantatong, a Nong Khai Member of Parliament from the Pheu Thai Party and Deputy Government Whip, highlighted the importance of respecting each party's resolutions within the framework of a democratic regime.

According to Thai News Agency, the People's Amnesty Network submitted a letter to Ms. Chanok, urging the government to expedite the amnesty law. The letter called for the parliament to address all amnesty bills within the 120-day timeframe of the current session, with particular focus on the People's Amnesty Bill. It also requested the inclusion of offenses under Section 112, citing concerns about freedom of expression and basic human rights violations. The network argued that prosecutions under Section 112 have been used as a political tool since the coup on September 19, 2006, and that the law's harsh punishments necessitate its inclusion for societal reconciliation.

The letter further emphasized that amnesty should be comprehensive and non-discriminatory, benefiting all affected groups equally rather than serving any specific political interests. Ms. Chanok indicated that the matter would be presented for consideration by the government whip, with a meeting expected on Monday. The coalition parties will need to reach a consensus, with an emphasis on the government's dedication to addressing amnesty as a priority. She noted that political adversity has plagued the nation for over 20 years and that the government has acknowledged the urgency of the resolution, including four amnesty bills on the agenda, one of which is a draft from the public sector. The process will respect the opinions and resolutions of each coalition party, consistent with the principles of a democratic regime.
