Flooding in Sukhothai begins to ease – the largest mass of water has passed

Flooding in the northern districts of Sukhothai, both Sawankhalok and Si Samrong, has begun to stabilize and decrease somewhat, but has spread widely after the largest mass of water has passed. Economic zones are spared from flooding. From a high angle view in Sawankhalok District, which is one of the most heavy-duty points in Sukhothai, the water that used to flood the road in front of Sukhothai Airport for a distance of more than 5 kilometers has now receded to only cover some road surfaces, cars can pass through. The water that flooded houses in Khlong Krajong Subdistrict has begun to recede, but there is still flooding higher than 1 meter. In Khlong Krajong Village, villagers are still suffering because they still have to wade through the water to get in and out of their houses. Some have had their electricity cut off, and some roads are broken. At Ban Tha Thong, Tambon Tha Thong, Amphoe Sawankhalok, which had to receive water from a broken embankment and cut off the road, the water level has dropped b y about 30 centimeters and the water flowing through the embankment has begun to ease. However, rice, water, and essential items must still be delivered by hoist across to the other side to more than 20 families who were cut off after the road was cut off by the current for almost 20 meters. Due to the overflowing water along the banks and embankments of the Yom River in Sawankhalok and Si Samrong districts, which are in the north of Sukhothai, the Yom River level flowing through Sukhothai city this morning is 7.52 meters, more than 60 centimeters below the critical point, and has escaped the flooding. Mr. Sophan Srisawangworakul, Director of Sukhothai Irrigation, said that the largest mass of water has now started to pass through Sukhothai. The water discharge to the Yom-Nan canal will start to reduce the flood impact on villagers in Tambon Nai Mueang, Amphoe Sawankhalok, but the water will be pushed into the old Yom canal. As for the water that has overflowed into the northern districts, it will overflow into agricultural areas. It is expected that the situation will return to normal in 3-4 days, with only some flooding remaining in low-lying areas. Source: Thai News Agency
