Flooding in Mae Sai Sparks Fears of Toxic Contamination

Mae Sai: The rainy season has just begun, but heavy rain in Myanmar has caused water in the Mae Sai River to overflow into several communities in Mae Sai District this morning. Villagers are chaotically moving their belongings to escape the water and are afraid that there will be another major flood like last year. On top of that, they are also worried about the toxins contaminating the Sai River.

According to Thai News Agency, the Mae Sai people feel like the flood images are replaying like the great flood last year, which makes them more afraid and worried. Behind me now is the point under the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, the Mae Sai border, which is the point where the Sai River flooded 4 communities in Mae Sai District early this morning. This point is the point where they are rushing to build a flood barrier, but it is not yet finished. After the heavy rain in Myanmar, the Sai River flooded both the Thai and Myanmar sides, especially dozens of shops in Sai Lom Joy Market, which is located by the river. This morning, the water level was more than 1 meter high before it receded. The vendors did not expect the water to come this fast, so they did not have time to pack their belongings. Even though most of them had experience from the great flood last year and had already moved their goods to higher ground, they still could not escape the water in time, causing damage to their belongings. More impo rtantly, they are also worried about the toxins that are contaminated with the Sai River that is flowing in.

Similarly, villagers in 4 communities in Mae Sai, including Hua Fai, Koh Sai, Mai Lung Khan and Mueang Daeng, some of whom were unexpectedly flooded and are worried that the flood will worsen. This is the second time that Mae Sai has flooded since the rainy season was declared, after heavy rains in Myanmar and Mae Sai District. There were two masses of water that rose to their highest at 4 am and 8 am. Mr. Warayut Khomboon, Mae Sai District Chief, said that there was a plan to warn and evacuate people, including warning people, especially vulnerable groups, to be careful of toxic substances that come with the Sai River and flood.
