Ayutthaya: Flooding in Ayutthaya has now spread to 12 districts, impacting nearly 50,000 households.
According to Thai News Agency, the flooding situation in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province worsened after the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat Province released water at a rate of 2,300 cubic meters per second. This has caused hardship for residents living along both sides of the river, with floodwaters in some areas remaining high for more than 3-4 months since the end of May 2025.
Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province has been severely affected, with Bang Sai District being the latest to experience flooding. This brings the total number of affected districts to 12 out of 16, impacting over 49,239 households. Residents of the Tha Din Daeng community in Bang Ban District have faced flooding up to the second floor of their homes, necessitating the use of scaffolding to protect their belongings. Water levels in the area remain 2-3 meters high, and despite some easing in water drainage, the river continues to be flooded.
The Tha Din Daeng community, a low-lying area, has been dealing with flooding since May. For 3-4 months, water has reached as high as the second floor, yet residents continue to live with the water. This area experiences flooding annually, varying in severity based on the year’s water levels. Local agencies are urged to address the flooding problem in a concrete manner.
Ms. Sabida Thaiset, the Minister of Culture, visited Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province to monitor the flood situation and its impact on ancient sites. She received a report summarizing protection measures for ancient sites from flooding. Currently, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya’s island area, an important historical site, remains unaffected, with tourist attractions and transportation routes still accessible. Ms. Sabida instructed the Fine Arts Department to closely monitor and integrate all sectors to protect ancient sites and key tourist attractions.
Ms. Sabida inspected historical sites such as Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Pom Phet, examined flood protection measures on the western side of Ayutthaya Island at the Chedi Sri Suriyothai, and distributed relief supplies to flood victims at Wat Sala Poon Worawihan. She also visited and monitored the flood situation at the Darussunnah Mosque.
