Fishermen Petition Security Committee Over Myanmar Warship Shooting Incident.

Bangkok: Fishermen have entered the parliament to petition the Security Committee regarding the incident where a Myanmar warship fired upon a Thai fishing boat. Mr. Rangsiman Rome, an MP for the party list and deputy leader of the Prachachon Party, has accepted the petition and plans to invite relevant agencies to provide clarification on December 13. He emphasized that the action was excessive and criticized the Thai government’s response as insufficient given the gravity of the situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rangsiman Rome, who serves as the chairman of the National Security, Border Affairs, National Strategy and Reform Committee, received a letter from the residents of Phang Nga Province. The letter described concerns over the actions of a Myanmar military warship that allegedly shot at a Thai fishing boat. The fishermen’s representative expressed that the warship’s actions were excessive and that any warning shots should have been directed into the sky or water, rather than at the vessel i
tself.

Mr. Rangsiman outlined two key issues: the potential border violation and the excessive nature of the military action, both of which require further investigation. He highlighted the seriousness of using violence at such a level, stating that it is unacceptable as it poses a risk of causing death. The Thai government’s light stance in response to the incident was also criticized, with Mr. Rangsiman stressing the importance of taking serious action to avoid recurrence.

On December 13, Mr. Rangsiman plans to invite several relevant agencies, including the National Security Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Royal Thai Navy, to discuss the matter. The Security Committee aims to gather facts and official information to address the situation effectively. Mr. Rangsiman emphasized the importance of Thailand maintaining a strong defense and stance as an independent state.

Expressing sympathy for those affected by the incident, Mr. Rangsiman also hoped for the release and safe return of the fo
ur arrested individuals. He noted the historically close relationship between the Thai and Myanmar governments and suggested that this relationship should be leveraged to secure the release of the hostages. Mr. Rangsiman concluded by underscoring the need for Thailand to communicate the seriousness of the situation to Myanmar to prevent similar incidents in the future.
