Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Urges MEA to Clarify Recent Power Outage Issue

Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has urged the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) to address and report on the widespread power outages that recently affected several areas. Citizens impacted by the outages have voiced their concerns and are calling for compensation.

According to Thai News Agency, on the night of August 5th, a significant power outage struck the Saphan Khwai area in Phaya Thai District, affecting Pradiphat Road and Rama VI Road. The MEA managed to resolve the issue and restore power by 11:50 PM. The ERC has since coordinated with MEA to ensure that a detailed report on the incident, along with solutions and preventive measures, is provided to prevent future occurrences. Residents affected by the outage have expressed distress and are demanding a clear explanation of the exact cause. Some residents acknowledged the swift resolution but are seeking compensation, given the area's economic importance and dense population. The outage disrupted power to entire buildings, public lighting, traffic signals, and internet services.

The MEA has initially attributed the outage to a technical malfunction of equipment in the substation during standard maintenance preparations. They assured that the incident was not related to terrorism or cyber threats, and further clarification on the equipment failure is forthcoming.

Reporters observed that the ERC's service standards for electricity distribution licenses include consumer protection measures and potential fines for service providers. These regulations aim to ensure high-quality service for electricity users. It remains to be determined whether the ERC will impose any penalties on the MEA for this incident.
