Elder Sister Seeks Justice After Military Vehicle Accident Claims Brother’s Life

Bangkok: A case involving a military vehicle accident that led to the death of a young motorcyclist and serious injuries to his nephew may have taken a turn a year later, leaving the victim's family in distress.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Waraporn, 37, reached out to Mr. Ekkapop Lueangprasert, founder of the Sai Mai Must Survive page, after her younger brother and nephew were involved in a tragic accident. The incident occurred in November 2013 when her brother and nephew were on their way to deliver clothes. A military vehicle reportedly hit their motorcycle from behind on Erawan Road, resulting in the brother's death and severe injuries to the nephew, whose face was disfigured.

Ms. Waraporn expressed the profound impact the incident had on her family. Her younger brother had been the main support for their parents, and the accident left her nephew needing continuous psychiatric care and unable to attend school. The emotional toll extended to her father, who became severely depressed and eventually died, longing to be reunited with his son.

Ms. Waraporn recounted her struggles in pursuing justice. She initially filed a civil lawsuit against the sergeant who was driving the military vehicle. However, she was disheartened when the charge of negligence was reclassified as joint negligence, a development she was not informed about by the police. This revelation prompted her to seek clarity and justice for her brother's death.

Compensation from the sergeant major amounted to 5,000 baht each for Ms. Waraporn's deceased brother and injured nephew, a sum she deemed inadequate given the emotional and financial loss her family sustained. Her brother had been a pillar of support, and his absence left the family in a state of suffering.

Mr. Ekkapop emphasized the necessity of holding parties accountable and ensuring the victim's family receives justice. He pledged to have the page's lawyer examine the case further and to coordinate with the Ministry of Justice to seek appropriate compensation for the family.
