DSI Launches Operation Than Volt, Destroying 25 Bitcoin Mines

Thanyaburi: The Department of Special Investigation (DSI), in collaboration with local government officials, conducted a significant crackdown on illegal Bitcoin mining operations in the Thanyaburi District of Pathum Thani Province. The raid resulted in the destruction of 25 Bitcoin mines and the seizure of approximately 600 mining machines. Authorities are now preparing to investigate potential involvement of government officials in these operations.

According to Thai News Agency, the joint operation included administrative officials and representatives from the Provincial Electricity Authority. They searched 25 commercial buildings and rental houses following reports of illegal electricity usage for cryptocurrency mining. This illicit activity was causing financial harm to the state and affecting the country's economic security.

The operation uncovered a well-organized crime network, with distinct roles assigned to individuals involved. The buildings used for mining were modified to include enhanced heat and noise protection, and the operation was strategically spread across various communities to avoid detection. This spread marked a shift from previous strategies, which involved clustering activities in warehouses or large houses. Authorities are currently investigating whether any government officials were complicit in these activities. Since 2022, the state has reportedly lost 738 million baht due to illegal electricity use for Bitcoin mining, including losses from the recent raid.
