Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Announces Positive Progress on Ceasefire Agreement at GBC Meeting

Kuala lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, acting as Prime Minister, has announced that the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Malaysia has led to an agreement on an immediate ceasefire, marking a positive development in the ongoing negotiations. He emphasized the seriousness and sincerity required to achieve this goal, highlighting the role of ASEAN as a witness in case of any violations.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham stated that the GBC meeting was a significant step forward, with both sides showing commitment to implementing the ceasefire. He assured that mechanisms are in place to address any breaches of the agreement, with the Regional Border Committee (RBC) serving as a platform for further discussions between commanders from both sides. Malaysia and ASEAN are expected to act as observers to ensure compliance with the ceasefire agreement, underscoring the importance of international oversight.

Mr. Phumtham clarified that MOU 43 is not relevant to the current ceasefire discussions and requires separate deliberations if it emerges as a concern. He reiterated that today's meeting focused solely on ceasefire measures to prevent conflict escalation, and any issues related to MOU 43 would need to be addressed at a higher level if necessary.
