Bangkok: The Democrat Party has announced an executive committee meeting scheduled for September 18 to determine the date for selecting a new party leader. Pramuan Pongthawaradej, the deputy leader and acting party leader, emphasized that the party will gauge public opinion to guide its revitalization efforts. He clarified that a recent meeting of party MPs was routine, focusing on preparations for upcoming House of Representatives sessions and not on party leadership selection. The actual discussions regarding the selection process will occur at the September 18 meeting, where at least 250 individuals, including members, former ministers, and local council members, will be invited.
According to Thai News Agency, Pramuan stated that no formal discussions have been held about potential candidates for the new party leader. The party is prioritizing public opinion and societal direction to ensure effective revitalization and representation. He noted that the public is closely monitoring the selection process. Pramuan assured that the process will adhere strictly to party rules and regulations, including the Organic Act on Political Parties, to establish a new executive aligned with the objectives set by Mr. Chalermchai. He acknowledged the importance of public feedback in shaping party strategies.
Pramuan also addressed the qualifications necessary for those aspiring to lead the party. He indicated that former MPs, party members, and resigned former prime ministers generally qualify to run for leadership. Others, who have not been members of the House of Representatives, might need additional qualifications, such as a two-year party membership or an exemption under party regulations. The timeframe for the leadership election is tentatively set for October 18-19, but specific details remain undecided.
