Bangkok: The Democrat Party marked its 79th anniversary with a vibrant celebration, attended by core leaders of the Bhumjaithai Party, Chartthaipattana Party, and RTSP Party, who extended their congratulations on the occasion. The event featured a three-religion ceremony led by Mr. Chalermchai Sri-on, party leader and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, who emphasized adherence to the principles and ideology of democracy while guiding the party forward.
According to Thai News Agency, the anniversary celebration took place under the theme 'Moving On to the 8th Decade' and began with an Islamic religious ceremony held on the 3rd floor of the MR Seni Pramoj Building. Key figures present at the ceremony included Mr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Mr. Decha Isara Khaothong, party secretary and Deputy Minister of Public Health, Mr. Montree Panoyon, assistant secretary to the Minister of Public Health, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Surin Palare, secretary-general of the Central Islamic Council of Thailand. The ceremony, led by Mr. Prasarn Sricharoen, chairman of the Chularatchamontri Qualified Persons, involved a zikr (praising) ceremony and a dua for blessings.
The merit-making ceremony followed, based on the principles of Islam, Brahmanism, and Buddhism. Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamangkhun Muni presided over the Buddhist elements for good fortune. Party leaders such as Mr. Suchatvee Suwansawat and other prominent members, including Mr. Banyat Bantadtan, Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, and Khunying Kalaya Sobhonphanich, also attended. However, former party leader Mr. Chuan Leekpai was absent due to an overseas engagement.
Representatives from various political parties joined to offer their congratulations. Notable attendees included Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa from the Chartthaipattana Party and Mr. Paradorn Prisananantakul from the Bhumjaithai Party. This event also marked the first time the Pheu Thai Party congratulated the Democrat Party, led by Mr. Surawong Thienthong, who presented a flower basket.
Mr. Chalermchai reflected on the party's founding in 1946 as a representation of democratic ideals and opposition to dictatorship. He highlighted the unchanging principles and ideology of the party amidst a rapidly evolving world. Emphasizing unity, he stated, "The Democrat Party's heart lies in its principles. I have been an MP since 2001 and have never considered changing parties. I may not declare lifelong loyalty, but I am committed to the party's mission."
Mr. Chalermchai also expressed his intentions to lead the Democrats in uniting all people and driving Thailand forward for peace and well-being. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but saw the anniversary as a new beginning for beneficial activities and religious advancement.
