Bangkok: The president of the Thai Chamber of Commerce has called for immediate action from the new commerce minister to address pressing economic challenges, emphasizing the need to accelerate export policy implementation while preserving economic sovereignty and ensuring border trade security.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, highlighted several risks currently facing the Thai economy. These include a slowdown in exports, uncertain trade relations with the United States, and tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border. Mr. Aramwattananon stressed that Mr. Chatuporn Buruspat, the newly appointed Minister of Commerce, must urgently and continuously drive domestic trade policies and exports.
The trade issue with the United States remains a significant concern. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira is set to negotiate on this matter, and the private sector is hopeful for a timely resolution. Failure to resolve these trade tensions could further impact exports.
Additionally, issues with border trade and cross-border trade between Thailand and Cambodia require urgent attention to resume trade activities. This must be done while maintaining sovereignty and economic security at the borders, ensuring Thailand is not disadvantaged in negotiations.
Mr. Aramwattananon emphasized the importance of accelerating exports to stimulate economic circulation, attract capital, create employment, and restore investor confidence, all within the legal framework. He concluded by stating the new cabinet's proactive approach is crucial in restoring confidence in the Thai economy and society, which are currently facing multiple risks.
