Bangkok: Chalermchai Sri-on has resigned as the leader of the Democrat Party without any prior notice, leaving party members in surprise. The deputy leader of the Democrat Party, Mr. Chaichana Dechacho, addressed the situation, maintaining there is no internal conflict within the party. He emphasized that party members hold a strong sense of camaraderie and there is no division.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaichana expressed that he only learned of Chalermchai's resignation through the news, with no prior indication or signal from the former leader. He confirmed that the decision to resign is a personal matter for Mr. Chalermchai. Mr. Chaichana highlighted the unity among the party's leadership and their collective affection for one another, stating that Mr. Chalermchai has always demonstrated a deep commitment to the Democrat Party.
Mr. Chaichana explained that the party will proceed according to its regulations and legal framework. A special meeting will be convened to elect a new party leader and executive committee. He assured that Democrat Party members will continue to fulfill their roles while awaiting the election of new leadership to set the future policy direction.
When questioned about potential changes following Mr. Chalermchai's resignation, especially considering the upcoming dissolution of parliament, Mr. Chaichana dismissed the notion of Mr. Chalermchai joining another party. He reaffirmed that Mr. Chalermchai holds a deep affinity for the Democrat Party and has no intentions of leaving.
Addressing concerns about a possible party breakup, Mr. Chaichana reiterated that the party remains intact. He mentioned that those who have left the party have already made their decisions. Mr. Chaichana also touched on the issue of some MPs voting for Anutin Charnvirakul as Prime Minister, stating that while it is their constitutional prerogative, MPs should consider party resolutions when making such decisions. He emphasized the importance of adhering to party resolutions to maintain political integrity and a robust democratic system.
Mr. Chaichana confirmed his own commitment to the Democrat Party, stating that he was born into the party and intends to remain despite any challenges. He acknowledged that leadership within the party changes periodically and that some incoming executives may receive mixed reactions. However, he remains steadfast in his dedication to the organization.
Reporters noted that Mr. Chalermchai submitted his resignation letter, dated September 12, 2015, without informing any MPs or party executives. It is reported that he has not resigned from party membership.
