Bangkok: "Bhumjaithai" has done it, have you done it yet? This was the poignant question posed by Mr. Chaichanok Chidchob, MP for Buriram and Secretary-General of the Bhumjaithai Party, as he addressed the Prime Minister from the stage of the 69 budget debate. His remarks came amidst discussions on the ongoing flood crisis and the steps necessary to mitigate its impacts.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaichanok expressed his concerns that the disasters he previously worried about are now materializing and could worsen. Despite these challenges, he felt encouraged by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul's open-minded approach. Mr. Anutin, he noted, engaged with him warmly and was receptive to the insights shared, particularly those he did not initially understand coming from a Gen Y politician.
Mr. Chaichanok highlighted a critical initiative driven by Mr. Anutin, which involved issuing a timely announcement to closely monitor water levels, predicting early rains this year. This proactive measure, he believed, would enable quicker responses to any impending disaster. Traveling from Buriram to the South, he observed heightened alertness in every area in response to the Ministry of Interior's announcement.
The Bhumjaithai Party's efforts, led by Mr. Anutin, also included deploying resources to Ayutthaya Province, identified as a potential epicenter for severe flooding. Mr. Chaichanok emphasized that while natural disasters do not discriminate, acknowledging and adapting to them is crucial.
Further into his address, Mr. Chaichanok broached the topic of rare earth discoveries in Thailand, urging the need for cautious and strategic resource management. He cautioned against potential environmental impacts from mining and called for internal unity and careful diplomacy, especially when negotiating with major powers like China and the United States.
Amidst these pressing issues, he extended his support to Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra, recognizing the societal pressures and criticisms she faces. Reflecting on past crises, he underscored the importance of preparedness and prudent budgetary allocations to mitigate future challenges.
Mr. Chaichanok concluded his speech by urging both supporters and critics to deliberate on the presented information for the national interest. He praised the collaborative efforts in organizing the Color of Buriram event, which successfully stimulated the local economy through a unique integration of government, private sector, and community initiatives.
Throughout his address, Mr. Chaichanok reaffirmed the Bhumjaithai Party's commitment to their responsibilities, advocating for actions that serve the best interests of the Thai people. His closing question, "Have we done it? Have you done it yet?" served as a call for continuous accountability and action amidst the nation's challenges.
