Bhumtham Convenes Urgent Meeting to Address US Tariff Imposition on Thailand

Bangkok: Bhumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting as Prime Minister, has called for an urgent meeting of relevant ministers to address the United States' recent announcement of imposing a 19% tariff on Thailand. This decision comes after the US declared retaliatory tariffs on several countries, including Thailand, effective from August 1, 2025. The primary focus of the meeting is to formulate countermeasures and devise remedial actions for the domestic sectors most affected, notably within the industrial and agricultural arenas.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting gathered key cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pichai Chunhavajira, Foreign Minister Maris Sengiampong, Commerce Minister Chatuporn Buruspat, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, and Industry Minister Ekanat Promphan. These ministers are tasked with evaluating the potential impacts of the US tariffs and exploring strategic responses to mitigate any adverse effects on Thailand's economy and its private sector.

Following the discussions, Mr. Phumtham and Mr. Pichai are expected to jointly announce the outcomes of the meeting, outlining the steps Thailand will take in response to the US tariff imposition. The announcement aims to provide clarity and assurance to those potentially impacted by the tariffs, ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to safeguard Thailand's economic interests.
