Athletes Petition to Move ASEAN Para Games Opening Ceremony to Ya Mo Square

Nakhon ratchasima: Athletes, officials, and coaches from the Thai national sports team for the disabled, along with the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Disabled Association Network, totaling 250 people, gathered at Nakhon Ratchasima City Hall to submit a letter to Mr. Chaiwat Chuenkosum, the Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

According to Thai News Agency, the group expressed concerns after learning about the decision to move the opening ceremony of the 13th ASEAN Para Games, originally planned for the 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, to Phimai Historical Park in Phimai District. The new venue is 65 kilometers away from the city center, where the athletes are staying. Although the historical significance of Phimai Historical Park is acknowledged, the surrounding terrain, which includes grassy, sandy, and laterite areas, poses challenges for wheelchair accessibility.

The athletes and supporters are advocating for the ceremony to take place at Lan Ya Mo, which offers better facilities for the disabled. The competition is expected to involve approximately 1,000 wheelchair users, and moving the venue would not only provide convenience but also help raise awareness about accessibility needs.

The 13th ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima Province are scheduled to take place from January 20-26 next year.
