ASEAN Observers Inspect Ceasefire Violations in Anma Channel Area

Ubon ratchathani: An ASEAN observer team (IOT) visited the Chong An Ma area in Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, to assess the situation concerning alleged Cambodian ceasefire violations. The inspection was part of a broader initiative to monitor and address tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, particularly regarding territorial disputes. According to Thai News Agency, the delegation was led by Maj. Gen. Samsul Rizal bin Musa, Malaysia's Assistant Defence Attache to Thailand, and comprised 14 personnel from eight ASEAN member countries, including Brunei, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. The team aimed to investigate the Cambodian intrusion into the barbed wire, which violates the existing ceasefire agreement and undermines trust between the neighboring nations. During their visit, the observer team encountered resistance from a Cambodian soldier who expressed dissatisfaction with the Thai delegation. The soldier protested the presence of too many fo llowers and restricted the delegation's movement, allowing access only to the Ta Om Monument area. Additionally, Thai media and officials were confined to a nearby shop area, while the Cambodian soldier invoked national sovereignty in an apparent bid to attract attention. Despite these challenges, the observer team remained focused on their task, inspecting the area and receiving briefings from the Thai military. The inspection revealed damage to surrounding shops from past conflicts, including bombings and fires. The Ta Om Monument was identified as a crucial point of investigation. The Thai side provided context regarding the area's history, noting that it previously served as a refugee center managed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) before its conversion into a casino. The Anma Channel region holds strategic significance due to past conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia. Currently, both nations deploy unarmed troops to maintain security in compliance with the ceasefire agree ment. The observer team's visit underscores ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
