Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has announced stringent measures to address forest fires and dust pollution, emphasizing severe penalties for those who engage in burning activities. He acknowledged the dilemma of balancing strict enforcement with public perception, noting that overly harsh measures could be criticized, while leniency might lead to accusations of negligence.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin discussed the situation in a recent interview, revealing that he has been in talks with governors from northern provinces, including Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. He mentioned that while the situation this year is relatively under control, and cooperation from residents, particularly farmers, has been positive, the authorities will maintain a vigilant stance over the coming month to ensure the dust issue improves. Anutin stressed that enforcement of laws against intentional burning will be rigorous, with severe punishment awaiting offenders.
Addressing concerns from the Chiang Mai Breath Council regarding the potential harshness of these measures, Anutin argued that the critical issue is environmental protection. He warned that unchecked burning, combined with external factors from neighboring countries, could pose serious health risks. Anutin highlighted the need for government intervention and support, particularly in managing increased costs associated with these preventive measures.
