ADB Appoints Anthony Gill as First Country Director in Solomon Islands

Honiara: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the appointment of Anthony Gill as the first Country Director of its newly established Solomon Islands Resident Mission in Honiara. Mr. Gill will lead ADB's operations in Solomon Islands and oversee the implementation of the upcoming Pacific Approach 2026-2030, which is set to be ADB's comprehensive country partnership strategy for the region. According to Asian Development Bank, Mr. Gill expressed enthusiasm for strengthening the longstanding partnership between ADB and Solomon Islands. He emphasized that the new resident mission will enhance ADB's ability to assist Solomon Islands in achieving development objectives by improving connectivity, constructing quality infrastructure, strengthening human capital, and promoting private sector development. Solomon Islands has been collaborating with ADB since 1973. To date, ADB has committed 49 sovereign projects and 134 technical assistance projects amounting to $644 million. ADB's current sovereign portfol io in Solomon Islands includes 10 loans and 20 grants worth $362.3 million. ADB-supported initiatives in Solomon Islands are primarily focused on developing quality infrastructure in the transport sector, including roads, and upgrading the international port in Honiara along with provincial wharves. The bank also facilitates investments in health, renewable energy, urban water supply and sanitation, solid waste management, and economic reforms through policy-based operations. Mr. Gill, an Australian national, brings 30 years of experience in development roles within both multilateral and bilateral organizations. His 18-year tenure at ADB has seen him in various leadership positions, including extensive work in Cambodia. His experience also spans roles such as member of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program Secretariat and head of both Portfolio Administration and Country Programming for ADB's Indonesia Resident Mission. Before joining ADB, he held senior roles with the Australian Governm ent. Since its establishment in 1966, ADB has been owned by 69 members, 50 of which are from the region.
