Academics Warn Against Complacency Despite Easing Border Tensions

Bangkok: Academics from Thammasat University are urging against complacency despite the recent easing of tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border. They emphasize the importance of preparing evacuation plans and shelters and stress the need to protect vulnerable groups in case of future incidents.

According to Thai News Agency, Assoc. Prof. Atchara Chalainnawin, Dean of the Faculty of Social Administration at Thammasat University, highlighted the necessity for Thailand to utilize this period of relative calm to prepare its citizens, especially those in border areas. The recommendation includes rehearsing plans for potential war-related disasters, setting up gathering points and shelters, and creating community maps to ensure effective disaster response.

Residents in high-risk areas are advised to prepare emergency kits containing survival essentials and important documents. Assoc. Prof. Atchara also stressed the importance of establishing special warning systems for vulnerable individuals, such as the visually impaired, and ensuring community maps are available to identify and assist those in need promptly.

She also recommended using applications like Be My Eyes to facilitate assistance for individuals with disabilities during emergencies. Emphasizing the importance of comprehensive planning, Assoc. Prof. Atchara stated that preparation must extend beyond immediate disaster response to include post-conflict recovery, involving social workers and multidisciplinary teams to support victims and restore economic stability.

The academic underscored the role of multidisciplinary teams, including psychotherapists and legal experts, in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups affected by conflict, ensuring they receive the necessary support and legal protection.
