Abbot of Wat Chuchit Disrobes Amid Investigation into 13 Million Baht Transfer

Wang noi: The abbot of Wat Chuchit, Phra Thep Patcharaporn, has voluntarily disrobed following the transfer of over 13 million baht to a woman known as "Ms. Golf". The former abbot confirmed there was no romantic involvement but admitted to being "naive" in the matter.

According to Thai News Agency, the decision to disrobe came after officials from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Anti-Corruption Division (ACD) conducted a nearly three-hour investigation into the temple's financial activities. Pol. Lt. Col. Siripong Sritula, assistant secretary-general of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), stated that the former abbot chose to disrobe in order to fully participate in the legal process.

The investigation revealed that the money transferred to Ms. Golf, totaling 12.8 million baht, originated from the former abbot's personal account. This amount was reportedly collected from invitations and teaching. Additionally, 380,000 baht was transferred from the temple account, both via phone and in cash, with transactions spanning from January to July 2024, including a significant transfer of 10 million baht in July.

Ms. Golf initially approached the former abbot at the temple, claiming to be a high-society individual and impersonating a senior monk. This led the former abbot to trust her, and he has since admitted to making a "big mistake" in trusting her. She borrowed money under the pretense of funding a ceramic business, without a contract, but later avoided repayment. The situation came to light following a separate incident involving a former abbot of Wat Trithotsathep, prompting the realization of deceit.

The investigation also uncovered that Wat Chuchit lacked a temple treasurer or committee, a vulnerability similar to Wat Yai Chom Prasat in Samut Sakhon Province. Despite rumors, both the former abbot and Ms. Golf have denied any romantic relationship. There is no evidence of blackmail, such as photos or videos. Furthermore, reports of an arrest warrant for the former abbot have been refuted, as the investigation is ongoing. Authorities may call upon both parties for further statements as the financial trail is examined.
