Ryerson University changing its name to Toronto Metropolitan University

Renaming is one of 22 recommendations put forward by Standing Strong Task Force to help the university address the legacy of Egerton Ryerson

TORONTO, April 26, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Earlier today, Ryerson University’s Board of Governors unanimously approved a motion to rename our institution “Toronto Metropolitan University” effective immediately. This change marks the start of a new chapter for the university, as it moves forward with a name that better reflects its values and aspirations.

“I cannot think of a better name than Toronto Metropolitan University,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi. “Metropolitan is a reflection of who we have always been – an urban institution dedicated to excellence, innovation, and inclusion and who we aim to be – a place where all feel welcome, seen, represented and celebrated.”

Located in the heart of Canada’s biggest and most diverse city, Toronto Metropolitan University represents all that it is to be metropolitan. The university is a gathering place for people from all over the world, from all walks of life, with broad and diverse perspectives, lived experiences and ambitions. Metropolitan also defines the university’s aspirations to expand its reputation and reach, as exemplified by its new Lincoln Alexander School of Law, its first international campus in Cairo, Egypt and its plans for a future School of Medicine in Brampton.

The new name is the culmination of work carried out over several years. Following the Board of Governors accepting all 22 recommendations put forward by the Standing Strong (Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win) Task Force, the university established a framework for the renaming process which included the formation of the University Renaming Advisory Committee (URAC).

“It was an honour to chair the University Renaming Advisory Committee, along with Vice-Chair Tanya De Mello. I am very pleased by the strong support of the Board of Governors and excited to have played a part in the adoption of our name which allows for a new beginning,” said Jennifer S. Simpson, Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Chair of URAC. “Through our community engagement we learned that there was a strong desire – across all groups of students, faculty, staff and alumni – for the new name to reference our place or location. Toronto Metropolitan University reflects the feedback we heard and is in line with our values and our accomplishments that define who we are as an institution.”

URAC oversaw extensive community consultations that generated responses from over 30,000 people and went on to review over 2,600 potential names. The committee produced a shortlist of names that were subject to several practical parameters including: ensuring alignment with our values, being intentionally inclusive with our diverse community, undertaking linguistic checks and trademark searches, and digital considerations.

Truth and Reconciliation is a key priority for the university, the renaming is an important and highly visible measure in the university’s path toward reconciliation, and it is just one more step in the journey. The University remains committed to supporting the ongoing work of the Truth and Reconciliation Working Group and implementing all of the remaining Standing Strong Task Force recommendations.

“This is a very important moment in our university’s history as we move forward with a name that better reflects our values and can take us into the future,” said President Lachemi. “As a university, our values have long defined who we are and they will always guide where we are going. They are the basis upon which we have built our uniquely vibrant, diverse and intentionally inclusive culture. Our new name builds upon these values and, along with our 73 years of excellence and achievement, it is intended to be a name that unifies all of us – a place where all of our community members belong.”

While the university is changing its name to better reflect its values and aspirations, the university’s mission, vision and visual identity will remain in place to maintain continuity, recognizability and ease the transition to a new name.

Further information, including more background on the renaming process and ongoing updates on the action plan to implement all Standing Strong Task Force recommendations, can always be found on the Next Chapter Website.

MONTREAL, April 26, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Castle Hall, the Due Diligence Company, is proud to announce the appointment of Matthias Knab, the founder of Opalesque, as Senior Advisor to the firm. Matthias will help guide the expansion of Castle Hall’s DiligenceExchange platform, working with both investors and asset managers. DiligenceExchange (“DXC”) offers an industry-standard approach to the collection of verified due diligence data which, in turn, powers Castle Hall’s innovative DiligenceExchange benchmarks.

“I’m extremely excited to join the Castle Hall team and contribute to the growth of DiligenceExchange,” said Knab. “DXC helps the industry in two ways. First, data gathering has become a true bottleneck, as asset managers respond to numerous data requests asking overlapping questions in slightly different formats. DXC standardizes data sets, which are then subject to Castle Hall’s independent ‘trust but verify’ checks to protect against fraud.

“Second, standardization of data allows Castle Hall to calculate DiligenceExchange benchmarks, delivering long-overdue transparency to the industry. The due diligence process is much more efficient when it is supported by evidenced data around, for example, how frequently do asset managers form a valuation committee, appoint independent members to a fund board, or how often investors will see asset managers employing multiple family members”.

“Matthias is one of the alternative investment industry’s most well-known and respected professionals,” said Chris Addy, Castle Hall’s CEO. “We are delighted to have his advice available to Castle Hall as we continue to expand DiligenceExchange, the heart of our fintech solution to due diligence.”

About Castle Hall

Indonesia prepares three health priority issues for G20

Indonesia has prepared three health priority issues for discussion for the G20 Forum, secretary general of the Ministry of Health, Kunta Wibawa Dasa Nugraha, said during the 2022 CSIS Global Dialogue on Zoom on Wednesday.

“Indonesia’s agenda after the pandemic is to become the G20 host. There are three priority issues,” he added.

The issues that will be brought up as part of the effort to strengthen the global health architecture are packaged within several programs and initiatives.

The first concerns building global health resilience through financial resource mobilization to prevent and handle the pandemic through preventive, promotional, and curative activities.

“We will also optimize genomic data sharing through trusted sources,” he informed.

The second relates to the harmonization of the global standard health protocol.

“For instance, we want to have a similar detection system in every nation,” Nugraha highlighted.

The third concerns expanding the coverage of the global pharmaceutical industry for prevention and preparation as a response to the threat of pandemics.

This will involve fair and equal distribution of vaccines, medications, and diagnostics to developing nations, he added.

Moreover, Indonesia will also encourage the transfer of knowledge that concerns data within the research mechanism between nations.

During the event, YARSI University postgraduate director Tjandra Yoga Ditama said that the coronavirus is expected to continue to mutate, but its level of severity will significantly decline over time.

“The virus variants that emerge in the future will not have significant severity without needing to gradually significantly improve or change the vaccines that currently exist,” he explained.

However, in the worst-case scenario, there will be a more vicious and deadly virus with the ability to evade vaccines, especially in vulnerable groups.

“This will require significant changes within the vaccines that currently exist,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, during the event, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that Indonesia’s G20 Presidency is committed to closing the health financing gap between advanced and developing nations.

Health protocols essential to prevent COVID spread during Eid: expert

The implementation of the COVID-19 health protocols is essential during the Eid exodus and gatherings in view of the threat of virus transmission, a medical practitioner at Prof. Dr. Sulianti Saroso Hospital has stressed.

During a virtual discussion held by the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, which was accessed from here on Wednesday, Pompini Agustina Sitompul said that 9,739 active COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Indonesia as of April 26, 2022, with around seven thousand patients self-isolating at home.

Sitompul, who also serves as the head of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Working Group at the hospital, said that some of the seven thousand patients undergoing self-isolation have experienced no symptoms.

Thus, there is a risk of transmission when people do not implement the health protocols and come into contact with people who are sick.

“Therefore, by implementing the health protocols, we are actually breaking the chain of (COVID-19) transmission,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, the function of vaccination is that the patient will not experience severe COVID-19 symptoms when an infection occurs.

For that reason, both vaccination and health protocols need to be carried out simultaneously as preventive measures.

Regarding the exodus, she reminded people that there are people who are more vulnerable to the virus, such as people with comorbidities and older adults, who need to be protected.

Thus, even though vaccinations have continued to be pushed and the coverage has continued to increase, people must keep complying with the health protocols as a form of self-protection and an effort to protect other people as well, she added.

The Indonesian government recently announced its decision to allow people to travel to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year in view of the improving COVID-19 situation in the country.

The trips will be allowed as long as prospective homecomers complete their primary and booster vaccinations. Those who have not received the booster dose will be required to show a negative COVID-19 test result.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was confirmed in March 2020. According to data from the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of April 27, 2022, the nation has recorded a total of 6,045,660 COVID-19 cases, 5,880,319 recoveries, and 156,199 deaths.

Eid exodus: Police implement contraflow scheme as traffic increases

The Traffic Corps of the National Police started implementing the contraflow scheme from kilometer (KM) 47 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road to KM 70 of Cikampek Utama Toll Gate on Wednesday to ease increasing traffic.

Head of operations of the corps, Senior Commissioner Eddy Djunaedi, said here on Wednesday that the attempt was aimed at managing the 2022 Eid Al-Fitr homecoming traffic, which has started to increase.

Meanwhile, according to a statement released by state-owned road operator Jasa Marga, the implementation of the contraflow scheme began at 7:36 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB).

The company is currently operating a total of 18 booths at Cikampek Utama Toll Gate.

Normally, there are 15 booths operated at the toll gate. However, to increase the transaction capacity, three more booths have been opened.

“We urge all road users to ensure that they prepare an excellent vehicle, an adequate electronic toll card balance, sufficient fuel, and enough snacks for the trip,” head of Jasa Marga’s corporate communication and community development group, Dwimawan Heru, said in his statement.

Initially, traffic management schemes in the form of one-way, contraflow, and odd-even plate number restriction were scheduled to be implemented from April 28 to May 1, 2022, based on the projected peak period for the Eid Al-Fitr homecoming traffic.

However, after the number of vehicles began to increase and flock the toll road on April 27, it was decided that the contraflow scheme needed to be implemented earlier.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. WIB the same day, the corps conducted a simulation of the odd-even scheme from KM 47 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road to KM 144 of the Kalingkung Toll Gate.

Thus, the simulation also led to traffic crowding as a number of vehicles that did not meet the requirement had to return and cancel their trip.

Investment realization in 2022 first quarter highest in past decade

Investment realization in the first quarter of 2022 was the highest in the last 10 years, as it reached Rp282.4 trillion (US$19.49 billion), increasing by 28.5 percent year-on-year, according to the Investment Ministry.

The figure also grew by 16.9 percent as compared to the realization of Rp241.6 trillion (US$16.68 billion) during the period from October to December 2021.

“It shows that the government has made the right attempts in formulating the investment policies. The policies have encouraged certainty for the investors to invest (in Indonesia),” Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia remarked during an online presentation on investment realization here on Wednesday.

The realization of foreign investment (PMA) during the January-March 2022 period had reached Rp147.2 trillion (US$10.16 billion), growing by 31.8 percent as compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

Meanwhile, the realization of domestic investment (PMDN) had reached Rp135.2 trillion (US$9.33 billion), rising 25.1 percent year-on-year.

Hence, the realization of investment in the first quarter of 2022 had reached 23.5 percent of President Joko Widodo’s target of Rp1,200 trillion (US$82.8 billion).

“The investors are starting to become confident in the stability of the government’s policies to encourage the realization of investment in Indonesia. Furthermore, the number of PMDN also increased. It is in accordance with our expectations to realize quality investment,” the minister stated.

Investment realization in the first quarter of 2022 was observed in several provinces, comprising Jakarta, West Java, Riau, East Java, and Central Sulawesi.

It was dominated by investment in basic metal, metal, and non-machinery goods and their equipment; transportation; warehouse and telecommunications; as well as mining industries.

In addition, most of the investment was realized in housing; industrial and office areas; as well as electricity, water, and gas sectors.

Lahadalia noted that the realization of investment in metal, metal, and non-machinery goods and their equipment manufacturing had become the main investment attraction since 2021.

“Our industry downstreaming program has been truly running. We will never be affected by any intervention from any country (which attempts) to hamper our downstreaming program,” he emphasized.

Most of the investment comes from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Japan, and the United States.

Travelers should buy online tickets for Eid homecoming: Minister

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir reminded homecoming travelers to buy tickets online in order to prevent congestion at the ferry port.

“We reminded homecoming travelers, who took means of land transportation, to buy online tickets in an effort to avoid congestion,” Thohir noted at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Wednesday.

The minister revealed that in the next two days, his side will channel its attention on land transportation handling measures owing to the likelihood of congestion at the port. Moreover, his side had assessed that the ship capacity was being handled appropriately.

However, the minister still aims to optimize the online ticket facilities in an effort to prevent congestion due to ticket purchases at the port.

“From the initial report that I received this morning, several people at the port still had not registered for online tickets. That could cause congestion,” he pointed out.

Hence, Thohir urged the River, Lake, and Crossing Transportation (ASDP) to immediately disseminate information on online ticketing facilities to homecoming travelers.

“Do not wait until the condition gets worse. Eventually, all toll roads are already jammed right now,” he reminded.

This minister conveyed this during the participants’ departure of the 2022 Safe Homecoming, Health Homecoming with SOEs. This activity targets to reduce the number of homecoming travelers using private vehicles to reduce congestion.

In addition to maximizing services on toll roads and ports, Thohir also noted that his side was currently encouraging people to take trains as their homecoming transportation to reduce congestion.

“We also encourage services, not only through toll roads but also trains. We have readied trains with up to eight million seats if required,” Thohir remarked.

He noted that during the 2015 homecoming, some six million train seats were sold and the traffic jam on the toll roads still occurred. Hence, with the current number of seats readied up to eight million, he was optimistic that it could offer benefits to the users of toll roads.

“Trains are safe and on-time transportation with no traffic jam,” he emphasized.

The homecoming organizers have also started an air route as another alternative to reduce congestion on toll roads.

“We have prepared nearly 959 thousand seats for those who chose to take air transportation. The report says there are still 40 percent seats available,” he noted.

Minister estimates normalcy restored in aviation industry in 6 months

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir estimates that the aviation industry in Indonesia will recover within the next six to eight months.

“The condition in several countries, including Indonesia, is starting to get back to normal. It may take six to eight months to return to normal since air transportation becomes an alternative for business trips and tours,” Thohir noted on Wednesday.

Hence, Thohir’s side is currently working to settle the state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia’s problem. However, the SOEs ministry refuses to be pushed by lessors or companies that provide services for leasing goods in the form of business use.

“We encourage the realization of Garuda Indonesia’s settlement. We also do not want to be pressured by lessors,” Thohir emphasized.

He emphasized that settlement with a lessor, who provided high rental prices with a corrupt element, must be avoided. Hence, until now, his side is still working on the best solution to restore Indonesia’s aviation conditions.

Thohir also said that his side will await the decision to postpone the debt payment obligation, or PKPU, in mid-May, specifically on May 20, 2022.

“Who knows, it could be a joint solution,” the minister noted.

The minister spoke of paying special attention to the aviation conditions in Indonesia. After the PKPU decision comes out, he will re-evaluate the supporting infrastructure from SOEs, especially in aviation.

Furthermore, his side will initiate market intervention if it is necessary to strike a balance.

“Indeed, we are concerned about this aviation industry,” he stated.

On the same occasion, Thohir also said that the airport’s recovery rate had reached 88 percent, with only 12 percent remaining towards normal. This increase in recovery is influenced by the Eid al-Fitr homecoming wherein people start to travel a lot for tourism purposes, going home, and to perform Umrah.

“The recovery rate at the airport has reached 88 percent, only 12 percent to reaching the normal condition,” he concluded.
