Bangkok: The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is set to commemorate World Soil Day 2024, marking the second decade of the event on December 5th, with aims to foster sustainable development, ensure food security, and enhance farmers' incomes. According to Thai News Agency, Assoc. Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, led a press conference unveiling the theme for this year's celebration, 'Caring for soils: measure, monitor, manage', along with the International Soil and Water Forum 2024. The event was attended by key figures including Mr. Itthi Sirilathayakorn and Mr. Akara Prompow, Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Jong Jin Kim, Assistant Director-General of FAO, and other prominent executives. Mr. Thaweesak Thanadechopol, Director-General of the Land Development Department, announced that the department will spearhead the organization of the World Soil Day event from December 5-11, 2024, at the Soil and Water Conservation Research Center in Pak Cho ng District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The event will integrate efforts from both government and private sectors to honor the legacy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the ongoing contributions of His Majesty the King and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in soil resource conservation and land development. Attendees can expect exhibitions such as 'Phumi Phak Rak Din', showcasing the late king's innovations in land development, soil management techniques, and water management for agriculture. The press conference also highlighted the announcement of winners for the World Soil Day 2024 photography contest under the theme 'Knowing Soil, Making a Living'. The first prize was awarded to Mr. Winniwat Traitrongthanarat for his photo 'Helping Mother', followed by Mr. Chanin Sae Fung's 'Paying Attention to Standards', and Mr. Seksan Saowaros's 'Plowing the Soil, Farmers' Way of Making a Living'.
