Transport Minister Pledges Clarity on 20 Baht Electric Train Fare Policy Within Two Weeks

Bangkok: Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has announced that a decision regarding the 20 baht electric train fare policy will be made within the next two weeks. This comes in the wake of a policy statement to Parliament, which highlighted the importance of the fare policy with passengers expected to start paying the full fare from October 1, 2025.

According to Thai News Agency, the Red and Purple Lines will return to their normal fares starting October 1st, although this may only be temporary until a clear resolution is reached. The Prime Minister has emphasized the need for this to be part of the policy presented to Parliament. Current measures involving a 20-baht fare reduction for the Red and Purple Lines are under review, with considerations on whether this will extend to other modes of transport like air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses, boats, and toll fees for expressways. These considerations are part of a broader cost-of-living reduction package for the public, which will require discussions with private sector concessionaires.

The government is examining comprehensive strategies to alleviate travel costs for Thai citizens, particularly those residing in Bangkok and nearby regions where commuting expenses are significant. The Ministry of Transport’s Permanent Secretary has been directed to identify the most cost-effective solutions. The previous administration’s 20 baht fare policy was discontinued due to the high compensation cost of nearly 20 billion baht annually, which primarily benefited Bangkok residents. As a result, the current government is proceeding cautiously to ensure nationwide satisfaction and fiscal balance.

The government aims to finalize and announce the policy within two weeks after the policy statement is completed, with implementation set to begin within four months. Given that the government is operating as a minority and has a limited timeframe to execute its plans, swift action is imperative.

If no extension of the current promotion occurs, fares for the Purple Line and Red Line will revert to full prices starting October 1, 2025. The MRT Purple Line fares will range from 14 to 42 baht, and the Red Line fares will range from 12 to 42 baht, depending on travel distance.
