Prime Minister Orders Swift Action for Southern Flood Relief.

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has mandated an acceleration of relief efforts for flood victims in the southern regions, emphasizing the necessity for urgent support. In a recent cabinet meeting, measures were approved to provide emergency interest-free loans through the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and tax deductions for home repair costs. According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan announced that Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra has instructed all relevant agencies to maximize their assistance to flood-affected residents. The cabinet's latest decisions include tax measures allowing citizens and businesses to deduct expenses for repairing homes or offices in flood-stricken areas from their taxes. These repairs, occurring between August 16, 2024, and December 31, 2024, can be deducted up to 100,000 baht, while car repair costs can be deducted up to 30,000 baht. The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, recognizes the urgent need for property repairs among taxpayers impacted by the floods. Ms. Sasikarn emphasized this, encouraging citizens with inquiries to contact any Revenue Department office nationwide or call 1161 for further information. The BAAC has initiated measures to assist customers in the flood-affected southern areas by extending the debt repayment period for up to one year and waiving interest. They have also introduced an emergency loan scheme for 2024/25, offering up to 50,000 baht per person at 0% interest for the first six months, and a rehabilitation and quality of life development loan with a limit of 500,000 baht per person. Affected farmers are encouraged to express their interest at the nearest BAAC branch or by calling 02 555 0555, available 24/7. Highlighting the extensive damage to agricultural products, housing, and property in the lower southern region, Ms. Sasikarn stated that Prime Minister Shinawatra is closely monitoring the situation. She has urged all agencies to integrate their effo rts to provide immediate relief and support future rehabilitation for those affected.
