“Phumtham” integrates 3 ministries to cope with Temu

Government House, "Phumtham" integrates 3 ministries: Industry, Public Health, and Commerce to deal with Temu after it sucks Thai money back to China. Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, mentioned the case of vendors at Sampeng Market complaining that many shops were taken over because Chinese merchants took over their shops without scanning money and only accepting cash, causing the money to be sent directly to China. What will the Ministry of Commerce do? Today, we must understand that the world trade system is changing and the online e-commerce system is quite emerging. What is happening is based on trying to cut out the middleman to maximize the benefits for consumers. This kind of system is happening all over the world and has influence in each country. Therefore, in our opinion, we must look at this. If we talk about the Temu platform, it has only been in existence for two weeks. The story that happened is a prediction, but it is understandable. The Ministry of Co mmerce has been assigned by the Prime Minister to take care of this matter because it is a duty. We are currently preparing to meet 3 ministries: the Ministry of Industry, Public Health, and Commerce, including the Department of Foreign Trade. The matter that will occur is related to the products that will be sold. If it is food or medicine, we must talk to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to see how to monitor and be strict. If the Ministry of Industry has to look at the Industrial Standards (TIS) to see how to inspect this matter. All of this must be under the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and we will look at the details of how we will control and protect ourselves. I confirm that we are not idle and are taking action on this matter. Mr. Phumtham continued that the world is changing and we must keep up. We must adjust laws and work processes. However, this is not about resisting, but about following the law to protect Thai consumers better. We must accept that there are both positive a nd negative aspects. Don't think that when they come in, what do we have to exchange? Because we have a trading process with China in the durian trade. The rules of world trade are changing. Thailand must be aware, follow the situation, and find preventive measures. When asked if there would be a way for him to pay taxes in Thailand, Mr. Phumtham said that he had not seen the actual tangible extent of how much cash he was withdrawing. This matter is the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance to take care of anyway. He ordered the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce to discuss with the Ministry of Finance about tax measures to be in line with the rules of the World Trade Organization.
