Chiang Mai: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, recently conducted an inspection of the Pha Muang Task Force operations, particularly focusing on the Ban Nor Lae base along the Thai-Burmese border. He addressed rumors regarding the Wa Red group's alleged violation of sovereignty, emphasizing that these are unfounded and confirmed the necessity of maintaining strong border controls to combat drug trafficking. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham attended a meeting where he reviewed the task force's performance, identified challenges, and discussed policy directives. He underscored the importance of a stringent approach to tackling the drug crisis, which he described as a serious threat to Thai society. The task force, responsible for overseeing a 933-kilometer area across 24 districts in six provinces, was urged to intensify efforts using asset seizure measures advised by the Ministry of Justice. Mr. Phumtham highlighted the widespread impact of drug-related issues , indicating that they have permeated nearly every community and village in Thailand. He emphasized the government's priority in addressing this problem, instructing all relevant units to fortify border security and prevent illegal drug inflow. Additionally, he confirmed that discussions concerning equipment for patrolling and operations, previously requested during former Prime Minister Settha Thavisin's term, have been addressed with appropriate support. During his visit to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Mr. Phumtham received updates from military commanders, noting that the situation along the border has been stable. He reassured that the military is fully prepared to defend national sovereignty against external threats and reiterated that the rumors regarding the Wa Red group do not pose any real issues.
