Bangkok: The Palang Pracharath Party has expressed its willingness to consider constitutional amendments, despite not having explicit policies on the matter. However, the party draws a line at altering Chapters 1 and 2, which include anti-corruption measures. Mr. Ekkanat Promphan, Minister of Industry and Secretary-General of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, stated that Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, emphasized the need for thorough legal studies and further examination of MOU 44 to ensure Thailand's interests are safeguarded. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkanat detailed discussions held with coalition parties on November 4, focusing on the Amnesty Bill and constitutional amendments. It was confirmed that the Amnesty Bill would not affect Article 112-a key stance for all coalition parties. Mr. Ekkanat reiterated that while constitutional amendments are not a priority for his party, they would not oppose them if pursued by coalition partners like the Pheu Thai Pa rty, provided Sections 1 and 2 remain untouched, along with anti-corruption safeguards. Mr. Ekkanat also addressed concerns over maritime negotiations with Cambodia, affirming the Palang Pracharath Party's commitment to protecting Thailand's territorial interests. During the coalition meeting, assurances were given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra that Thailand's sovereignty, particularly concerning areas like Koh Kood, would remain intact regardless of negotiation outcomes or changes to MOU 44. In a follow-up discussion with Deputy Prime Minister Phiraphan, Mr. Ekkanat highlighted the importance placed on border issues and maritime interests. Phiraphan, leveraging his legal expertise, plans to delve deeper into MOU44 and international law to ensure Thailand's benefits are maximized during negotiations. The focus remains on securing mutual benefits without compromising national interests. The historical context of Thailand's continental shelf declaration in 1973 underpins these negotiations, reinforcing the need for careful legal scrutiny. The coalition's unified stance underscores the significance of protecting national borders and maritime privileges while engaging in diplomatic talks. Mr. Phiraphan's meticulous approach aims to navigate these complex legal and international frameworks to maintain Thailand's strategic advantages.
