Flood Response Initiative Launched by Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

Bangkok: The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has initiated a strategic response to assist vulnerable groups affected by severe flooding in the southern regions, establishing a war room at the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center. The effort comes under the directive of Minister Warawut Silpa-archa, aiming to provide urgent support and relief. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa assigned Mr. Nikorn Chamnong, Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Monitoring and Expediting the Implementation of the Minister's Policy, to lead the meeting on the Center for Disaster Vulnerable Groups (CCDPP). The meeting saw participation from key officials including Mr. Kanok Wongtrangan, Mr. Anukul Peedkaew, and Ms. Sunee Srisongtrakullert, along with other executives and relevant personnel. Mr. Nikorn Chamnong reported that the establishment of the Disaster Vulnerable Group Administration Center (DPC), first opened in Songkhla Province, is a proactive measure to provide assis tance, care, and compensation to those impacted by disasters. The center's responsibilities include monitoring and evaluating the delivery of aid and engaging in proactive social communication to raise awareness across sectors. The decision to convene a meeting with provincial social development teams followed heavy rainfall that led to flooding in several southern areas. Yala Province has been significantly affected with continuous rain leading to high water levels. The local government has set up shelters, including Thesaban School 3, to accommodate affected residents. Currently, 90 people, including elderly, disabled, and children, have been relocated to temporary shelters, with support from the Yala Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office. Disaster areas have been declared in various provinces: Yala with 220 evacuees in 6 shelters, Pattani with 27 evacuees in 1 shelter, Narathiwat without shelters yet, and Songkhla with 275 evacuees in 2 shelters. Mr. Nikorn emphasized the importance of the war room's discussions and coordination efforts, acknowledging that while the response has been effective, the scale of flooding exceeded initial estimates. Essential supplies such as diapers and sanitary products are being distributed, with support in some areas from the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center. In conclusion, Mr. Nikorn highlighted the effective response of the Ministry's teams and the need to compile a comprehensive report for the Cabinet. The Minister of Social Development and Human Security stressed the importance of adhering to the established plans and addressing any arising issues, marking this as a critical mission for the Ministry's disaster mitigation efforts. The preparedness and adaptability of the response teams were commended, setting a precedent for future relief missions.
