Villagers Cultivate Organic Vegetables Along Huai Kho Reservoir to Boost Income

NA CHUEAK: Farmers in Ban Nong Saeng village have capitalized on the receding water levels of the Huai Kho Reservoir to cultivate organic vegetables, resulting in increased income and self-sufficiency for the community. The initiative has provided a financial boost to more than 30 households, with some earning nearly ten thousand baht monthly.

According to Thai News Agency, the decrease in water levels during the winter season has allowed villagers to utilize the fertile soil around the reservoir. This soil, enriched with minerals from being submerged for months, facilitates the growth of vegetables without additional fertilizers. Villagers, including 57-year-old Mrs. Panadda, are growing a variety of vegetables such as cabbage, spring onions, cucumbers, eggplants, yardlong beans, and cauliflower. These vegetables are either sold directly to traders at the plots or at the fresh market in Na Chueak District, generating an average income of 8,000-10,000 baht per person monthly.

Mr. Nattawut Monthaisong, head of the Khao Rai Subdistrict Administrative Organization, stated that the organization has provided seeds to the Nong Saeng vegetable growing group to support their endeavors. Each household has allocated space for vegetable cultivation, adapting to the changing reservoir levels by growing produce in kitchen gardens. The surplus produce is sold, ensuring a steady income for the villagers. This initiative highlights the community's resilience and ability to adapt to environmental changes while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
