Royal Rainmaking Department Extends PM2.5 Dust Reduction Efforts in Bangkok

Bangkok: The Royal Rainmaking Department has taken decisive steps to combat the persistent PM2.5 dust issue by coordinating with Aeronautical Radio to extend its dust reduction operations in Bangkok and its surrounding areas. Traditionally conducted twice daily, in the morning and afternoon, the operations will now include a pre-dawn period to target dust accumulation during early morning hours.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rachen Silaraya, Deputy Director-General of the Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation Department, Operations, announced plans to extend the dust dispersion operation time to 02.00-05.00 hrs. This change is motivated by air quality index levels, which peak in the morning. The department has sought permission from Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. to carry out operations during these hours.

Since December 2024, the department has been working diligently to mitigate PM2.5 dust levels using Bo Fai Airport in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province as the operational hub. Five aircraft are stationed there, with additional support from three aircraft in Kanchanaburi Province and two in Rayong Province, totaling ten aircraft dedicated to the mission. Each operation is preceded by strategic planning meetings, with air quality measurements taken before and after operations indicating consistent improvements.

Currently, the Air Quality Index in Bangkok and nearby regions is marked as yellow, indicating moderate air quality. The Meteorological Department forecasts a temperature drop of 1-5 degrees Celsius due to a high-pressure area from China. This change, alongside the department's operations, is expected to facilitate atmospheric channel drilling to effectively clear dust. However, as February progresses, shifting wind directions may lead to improved conditions in Bangkok but could exacerbate the situation in northern regions, necessitating ongoing monitoring and action planning.

The public is encouraged to stay informed and provide feedback on the Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation Department's activities through their official website and social media platforms, or by calling 02-109-5100 ext. 410 during office hours.
