Chiang Mai: Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Chalermchai Sri-on recently visited Chiang Mai Zoo to assess the preparations for the arrival of a new pair of pandas from China. This initiative is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China in 2025. During his visit, the minister evaluated whether the pandas should remain in their current exhibition space or be relocated to a larger area within the zoo to better accommodate an influx of visitors. If a new location is chosen, the expansion is expected to cover 20 rai with an estimated budget of 200 million baht. The exact timeline for the pandas' display is yet to be determined. According to Thai News Agency, the return of the pandas is a symbol of the strong relationship between Thailand and China, highlighting their joint commitment to wildlife conservation. This initiative not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also emphasizes the importance of conserving endangered species and promot ing environmental awareness. Wuttichai Muangman, Director of Chiang Mai Zoo, expressed confidence in the zoo's readiness to welcome the pandas. He noted that the zoo has prepared an appropriate habitat, food supplies, and has a team of doctors and experts on standby. The return of the pandas is expected to boost tourism in Chiang Mai Province, providing an educational opportunity for the Thai populace, especially the younger generation, to learn about panda life firsthand.
