Department of Religious Affairs Promotes Dhamma Practice on Buddhist Holy Days

Bangkok: The Department of Religious Affairs recently organized an event titled 'Faithfulness, Merit, Supporting the Community, Wat Bamphen Nuea', encouraging Buddhists to visit temples and engage with Buddhist principles on holy days. The event took place at Wat Bamphen Nuea in Min Buri District, Bangkok, aiming to foster community support through religious activities.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the Minister of Culture, appointed Mr. Phonphum Viphatiphumphathipet, Assistant Minister to the Ministry of Culture, to lead the event. Phra Khru Udomjaruwan, the abbot of Min Buri District and Wat Bamphen Nuea, served as the monks' chairman. The event was supported by Mr. Chaipol Suk-iam, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs, and attended by ministry executives, officials, and the public.

Mr. Polphum Viphatiphumphathipet highlighted that the project aimed to boost local economies, promote cultural heritage, and expand opportunities for Buddhists to engage in merit-making and meditation beyond Dhammasawan Day. Activities at Wat Bamphen Nuea included alms offerings by boat, community product exhibitions, and cultural performances at the Khwan-Riam Floating Market. The event also featured charitable activities such as distributing relief bags and releasing fish into the nearby waters, reinforcing community solidarity.

The Khwan-Riam Floating Market, inspired by the novel Plae Kao, serves as a cultural and economic hub between Wat Bamphen Nuea and Wat Bang Pheng Tai, offering a diverse array of goods and food, and hosting boating alms ceremonies. It is a vibrant example of community-driven economic and cultural activity, open on weekends and public holidays.

The Department of Religious Affairs has been expanding this initiative in collaboration with the Provincial Cultural Office. By integrating traditional practices with cultural tourism, they aim to generate income for communities and develop cultural capital. The initiative has grown to include 10 key locations across Thailand, enhancing opportunities for Buddhists to practice their faith while stimulating economic activity.

This initiative underscores the importance of Buddhism in Thai culture and its potential to drive community development and economic growth through religious tourism and cultural engagement.
