Yogyakarta to host G20 meeting of manpower ministers

Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah has confirmed that Yogyakarta province will host the meeting of manpower ministers of G20 member states in May this year.

After a meeting with Governor Hamengkubuwono X in Yogyakarta on Thursday, she said that the province has been selected as the meeting host as four issues that would be raised during the G20 Employment Working Group (EWG) forum are highly relevant to the situation in the province.

“We have selected Yogyakarta (as the host) because we must consider our four main issues,” Fauziyah remarked.

The four issues include the creation of sustainable employment to face global employment changes, development of an inclusive job market, and provision of affirmative jobs for people with disabilities, she said.

The other issues are the development of human resource capacity to achieve sustainable productivity and growth and the protection of adaptive labor in the changing situation, the minister added.

She then highlighted Yogyakarta’s commitment to empowering local MSMEs as a factor that resulted in the province being chosen as the host of the G20 manpower ministers’ meeting.

“Yogyakarta is among several provinces that have committed to developing local MSMEs to create new jobs, hence our decision to pick Yogyakarta (as the meeting host),” Fauziyah said.

Products of local MSMEs will be exhibited during the ministerial-level meeting, she informed while praising Yogyakarta MSMEs’ resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Yogyakarta MSMEs survived the pandemic and even created new jobs at that time,” the minister noted.

She also highlighted the provincial authority’s commitment to creating new jobs for people with disabilities as another motivation to pick the region as host.

The minister then asked the governor and the provincial authority to support the meeting as host.

“Hence, we hope that Governor Hamengkubuwono X can provide assistance to ensure the G20 EWG forum can be organized smoothly,” Fauziyah said.

Responding to Fauziyah’s request, Hamengkubuwono X affirmed that the provincial authority will support and facilitate the G20 manpower ministers’ meeting, which is being organized as part of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency this year.
