Makassar (ANTARA) – Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) discussed the importance of child-friendly television shows in a webinar, Tuesday.

At the webinar held by Hasanuddin University (Unhas) with KPI and the Association of Higher Education Communication Studies (ASPIKOM) for Regional Coordinator of South Sulawesi and West Sulawesi, the minister said that her ministry had coordinated with various parties to prepare “Broadcasting Behavior Guidelines and Broadcast Program Standards (P3SPS)”.

The guidelines require broadcasters to protect the interests of children or teenagers.

Child-friendly television shows must at least contain several elements, including making the best interests of children the central perspective and consideration in creating programs, she said. The program is also expected to solve children’s problems and prioritize protection from acts of violence, exploitation, discrimination, and other forms of mistreatment.

Then, the programs must also fulfill children’s fundamental rights to obtain good information to support their growth and development.

“To realize a program that includes these three important elements, joint efforts need to be made so that the good intentions of information providers can be presented appropriately and do not cause multiple interpretations,” she said.

“We are ready to establish partnerships with various institutions to ensure quality shows for Indonesian children,” continued the minister. She also hopes that all community groups will jointly realize the target of “Child Friendly Television” to fulfill children’s rights and provide protection for them by providing quality broadcasts.

In the meantime, the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Partnerships at Unhas, Prof. Dr. Nasrum Massi, PhD, said that television shows had a significant influence on children’s behavior.

Therefore, television shows are expected to have a positive impact on children’s growth and development.

“This is important to prepare television shows that have a good impact on children. Hopefully, this activity will run smoothly and provide great benefits for improving the quality of TV shows in the future,” he explained.
