Will fully support Nusantara construction: BMKG

Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati has affirmed that BMKG will fully support the preparations and construction of the new national capital Nusantara (IKN) and the capital transfer process.

She emphasized this even though BMKG is not listed as an institution/agency that will move to the new capital in East Kalimantan.

“We are ready to support, help, and work together with the Nusantara Capital Authority to build IKN,” she said here on Wednesday.

According to Karnawati, the BMKG will mainly help in preparing data and information such as on natural disaster mitigation and other activities related to meteorology, climatology, and geophysics.

The Kalimantan Island itself faces a smaller threat of earthquakes compared to other Indonesian islands, she noted.

Kalimantan is not in the megathrust zone, so if there is an earthquake, Kalimantan Island will not be severely impacted, she said.

According to the BMKG, based on its history, Kalimantan Island has not experienced damaging earthquakes with a high death toll, but this does not mean no quakes occur there, she added.

“Therefore, BMKG will strengthen the early warning system in Kalimantan by adding the number of accelerograph sensors and intensity meters,” she informed.

BMKG will also monitor President Joko Widodo’s vision to make Nusantara an inclusive, green, smart, and sustainable city. A city with those traits would reflect Indonesia’s commitment to tackling climate change, Karnawati remarked.

Indonesia has demonstrated its commitment to contributing to handling climate change at several international forums, and this process will be seen in the building of the IKN, she highlighted.

“This is a huge project, and Insya Allah, we are ready to make the President’s vision successful, which is to build IKN by adopting sustainable principles for the environment surrounding Nusantara. This principle (we) will adopt (is) the adaptation and mitigation of climate change,” she explained.
