VP urges local gov’ts in C Sulawesi to expedite MSME empowerment

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin urged local governments in Central Sulawesi Province to boost the empowerment and development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to improve the economy and community welfare.

“Our MSMEs must continue to be encouraged to broaden their market. We do not want them to experience stunting,” Amin stated on Friday.

The vice president noted that the development and empowerment of MSMEs must be improved to help them grow and develop properly as well as have an impact on improving the people’s welfare.

The empowerment of MSMEs is an approach adopted by the government in overcoming poverty.

“This includes our efforts to tackle poverty, especially extreme poverty,” he emphasized.

Amin also urged the local governments to change the poverty management scheme and model. One of the approaches is by changing the provision of social assistance for economically weak communities through empowerment.

“This is because we deal with poverty. We do not only provide social assistance, as it only preserves poverty,” Amin noted.

Hence, the vice president called for pursuing poverty management and control through community empowerment schemes, such as by conducting MSMEs’ empowerment and development. “Along with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs, we are striving to promote the movement. We will work to overcome obstacles, whether they are capital or technical in nature or related to production, marketing, and also partnerships. We will continue to facilitate all of that,” he noted.

The vice president is also optimistic that the local government, including Governor of Central Sulawesi Rusdy Mastura, would make systematic and massive efforts for the empowerment of MSMEs.

Amin paid a working visit to Palu City on January 6-7, 2021. One of the agendas of the working visit was a meeting with local governments related to economic recovery, improving public services, and MSMEs empowerment.
