US, UK discuss ambitious free trade agreement

US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson talked by telephone on Monday, a few days after Johnson’s Conservative Party won a significant majority in the British Parliament.

The two leaders discussed the huge importance of the UK-US relationship and looked forward to continued close cooperation on security and trade, including the negotiation of an ambitious free trade agreement. Trump has long talked up the prospect of a bilateral trade agreement with the UK, which would have to happen after its withdrawal from the EU.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters Monday that the two countries will begin negotiating an agreement as soon as possible, but did not offer a specific timeline.
