US deems Indonesia as important: minister

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – The United States (US) deems Indonesia as important, so the strategic partnership between the two countries should continue to be maintained, according to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.

“The US is a strategic partner of Indonesia for cooperation in economy, education, maritime, and counterterrorism,” Panjaitan remarked in a written statement here on Thursday.

He noted that the US deemed Indonesia as an important country in the region to maintain stability in economic growth and politics.

On Wednesday evening, Panjaitan was present as an honorary guest at the ceremony of the 242nd anniversary of US independence at the residence of US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan.

The minister stated that Indonesia and the US share an important historical relationship in terms of strategic partnership.

He also revealed a vision between the US and Indonesia that is not much different in terms of increased cooperation, especially in the field of maritime.

Indonesia and the US respect the applicable international law and have forged bilateral cooperation in the war against “illegal fishing” and environmental issues.

“The war on illegal fishing is so important that people can enjoy more seafood. Indonesia and the United States also uphold the freedom of navigation, and in the near future, we will also increase cooperation on coast guard, marine waste issue, and also technology. I think we will not stop cooperating with the US as our friend,” Panjaitan added.

In the meantime, US Ambassador to Indonesia Donovan also praised the government of the Republic of Indonesia during the celebration of the countrys Independence Day and also the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Indonesia-US friendly relations.

“The partnership between Indonesia and the United States is very special, as it is directly at the heart of the Asia Pacific region. This partnership is based on our shared values of democracy, tolerance, and mutual respect for each other. Indonesia and the United States both uphold the right of citizens to trust their beliefs,” Donovan emphasized.

Furthermore, the US ambassador noted that the common interests of Indonesia and the US facilitate cooperation in various areas, such as investment and education.
