Two E Kalimantan judokas have tested positive for COVID-19

Two East Kalimantan’s judokas, who have completed their matches in the 20th National Sports Week (PON) being held in Papua, have tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, their returns to their respective hometowns were delayed.

The athletes have conducted polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test before returning home scheduled on Sunday.

East Kalimantan judo coach Adianoor said the two athletes, Melia Kubus and Eko Haryono, are now under medical treatment in Mimika Hospital, Timika City.

“The judo team was scheduled to return to East Kalimantan on October 3, 2021. Of the three athletes conducted the PCR test, two had tested positive as asymptomatic patients status,” Adianoor said when contacted from Jayapura on Sunday.

While the bronze medalist in women’s 52 kg class Yaumil Aqsharini tested negative for COVID-19 and has returned to East Kalimantan along with the team’s manager Lukito.

“The two athletes who have tested positive will conduct PCR retesting. Hopefully, there will be an improvement and we can go home soon,” he said.

Adianoor will accompany the two athletes until they can return to East Kalimantan.

Spokesperson of East Kalimantan’s Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) Zulkarnaen said medical personnel of the province’s contingent in Mimika would accompany the two athletes.

If the PCR retesting showed a positive result, the two athletes would have to get medical treatment for at least 10 days, he said.

Judo matches in the 20th PON were held on September 26 to October 5 at Graha Eme Neme Yauware in Mimika.

East Kalimantan sent three judokas to the event and grabbed one bronze medal in the women’s 52 kg class.
