Tech can help narrow economic gap in Society 5.0: ministry

Technology can help bridge the economic gap in Society 5.0 as it can support the development of more creative talents in Indonesia.

The statement was made by the deputy for digital economy and creative products secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Riwud Mujirahayu, on Wednesday.

She urged technology companies to collaborate for creating a digital economy ecosystem in the country.

“We are currently welcoming Society 5.0, which is a solution for Industry 4.0 which many people think will use high-tech machines and reduce the number of human jobs. Society 5.0 is expected to create new value by using cutting-edge technology that is hoped to lessen the gap between humans and future economic problems,” Mujirahayu elaborated.

Some of the state-of-the-art technology that has been proven to support humans in building the creative economy includes Web 3.0, the Metaverse development, and artificial intelligence (AI), she said.

Regarding the digital economy, Indonesia has made great improvements from year to year, she noted. Especially because of the pandemic, people have made technology the main access and platform for their activities, she said.

For instance, the e-Conomy SEA 2021 report by Google showed that the value of Indonesia’s digital economy skyrocketed to 49 percent yoy (year-on-year) to reach US$70 billion or Rp1,004 trillion, she said.

Furthermore, based on research from We Are Social 2022, the number of active social media users in Indonesia reached 191 million, making the country an attractive market for the growth of the digital economy, she added.

With such rapid development, it is not surprising that Society 5.0 is anticipated to be applied along with the digital transformation that is currently ongoing in Indonesia, she remarked.

For that reason, the ministry welcomes technology companies who want to join and collaborate to create a stronger digital economy ecosystem in the country, she said.

The ministry will also continue to promote digital economy programs such as Baparekraf Developer Day (BDT), Baparekraf Digital Entrepreneurship (BDE), Baparekraf for Startup (Bekap), and the new Santri Digitalpreneur program, she added.
