Surveys indicate Ridwan Kamil’s electability is most stable: expert

Political expert, concurrently lecturer at the Department of Political Science at Padjadjaran University, Firman Manan assessed that West Java Governor M. Ridwan Kamil was the most stable presidential candidate as compared to other figures. The polls were conducted as presidential candidate surveys were released last month, one of which was a survey from Indicator.

“I think one of the main factors is since the work of regional heads is visible to the public, especially during a pandemic,” Manan remarked when contacted telephonically by reporters, Friday.

The Indicators survey institute released a national survey with the results of Prabowo Subianto, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, Ridwan Kamil, Sandiaga Uno, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, and Khofifah Indar Parawansa, as the names with the highest electability to become Indonesia’s 2024 presidential candidates.

In the results of a survey conducted by Indicator for the period from July 30 to August 4, 2021, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto had the highest electability in a simulation of 10 names.

As many as 27.8 percent of the respondents chose Prabowo as a presidential candidate if the presidential election were to be held at this time.

Ranking second was Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, with an electability rate of 21.4 percent; followed by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, with a 14.8 percent rate by respondents, while Ridwan Kamil came fourth, with 6.9 percent of the vote.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno stood fifth, with 6.1 percent; followed by Demokrat Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, with 5.9 percent; and East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, with 3.2 percent.

Manan believes there are several influencing factors behind Kamil’s electability, still at five percent, as compared to other figures.

“The first is about performance, while the second can be a party base. However, Kamil is not a party person. Ganjar Pranowo has an advantage, as there is a PDIP mass base that supports him. I do not think Kamil has one,” he remarked.

Based on this fact, Kamil’s electability stability is extraordinary, considering that other figures are mostly based on political parties, such as Prabowo Subianto, Ganjar Pranowo, AHY, Sandiaga Uno, Puan Maharani and Airlangga Hartarto.

“Hence, it is good enough to be able to compete with strong competitors,” Manan added.
