Security minister to talk about counter-terrorism at ASEAN Summits

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto is scheduled to talk about counter-terrorism during a session at the upcoming ASEAN Summits to be held in Laos, on September 6 and 7, 2016.

“As a delegation head for political security, I will present at the ASEAN Summits a report of the meetings on counter-terrorism and terrorism financing that we had organized recently,,” Wiranto said here on Monday.

Indonesia has played a crucial role in security cooperation in ASEAN as terrorism has become a threat that all nations face, he added.

The country has tightened its borders to prevent movement of terrorists.

He noted that international cooperation, including exchange of information gathered through intelligence, is needed for counter-terrorism because terror does not recognize borders.

Cyber media must also be monitored closely because it is often used as a tool of propaganda, he observed.

President Joko Widodo will also attend the ASEAN Summits and talk about the importance of regional stability and peace.

Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR and Chairman of the ASEAN Summit, will host the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related summits, namely the 19th ASEAN-China Summit to Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, the 19th ASEAN-Japan Summit, the 18th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit, the 19th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the First ASEAN-Australia Summit, the 8th ASEAN-UN Summit, the 14th ASEAN-India Summit, the 4th ASEAN-United States of America Summit, and the 11th East Asia Summit on 6-8 September 2016, at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane.

In addition, the 8th Mekong-Japan Summit will also be held on the sidelines of the said summits.

The 28th ASEAN Summit will discuss ASEAN Community building efforts, especially the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the way forward, while the 29th ASEAN Summit will focus on discussing ASEANs external relations and future direction as well as exchange of views on regional and international issues of common interest and concern.

An ASEAN Senior Officials Preparatory Meeting was held in Vientiane, Laos, on Monday, prior to the summits.
