President Jokowi approves new recruitment of 1,800 judges

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – President Joko Widodo has approved recruitment of 18,000 new judges to make up for shortage over the past seven years.

“The President has given the approval to the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN/RB). There is no longer problem for recruitment,” General Chairman of the Indonesian Judges Association (IKAHI) Suhadi said at the presidential palace here on Monday.

Suhadi made the statement after he and other leaders of the association met President Joko Widido (Jokowi), who was accompanied by Minister for Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.

Suhadi said according to the Supreme Court, Indonesia needed around 4,000 more judges after 7 years without recruitment.

Meanwhile the number of judges continued to decline as every year there are always judges reaching retirement age, he said.

“Actually we need around 4,000 new judges but the number we urgently need is around 1,800,” he said.

The new recruits would be for the Religious Court, General Courts and State Administrative Court, he added.

“The president himself has said there is no problem for the recruitment,” he said.
