President extends condolences over Lombok earthquake

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has extended his deepest condolences over the loss of several lives and the devastation caused by Sunday evenings powerful magnitude-7 earthquake that rocked Lombok and Sumbawa Islands in West Nusa Tenggara.

The head of state offered support to the quake-affected people and wished fortitude to the victims families and loved ones as well as all those affected by the quake.

Jokowi also sought consolidation in continuing rescue operations and the search for missing persons.

“On behalf of myself and the people of Indonesia, I express my deepest sorrow for the several brothers and sisters, who died in the earthquake in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday evening,” the president noted after reviewing the readiness of infrastructure for the 2018 Asian Games at the games venue in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, Monday.

Jokowi said he had ordered his staff to act promptly to handle the impact of the earthquake.

He ensured that the victims immediately received optimal treatment, including getting the necessary logistical assistance.

The president further emphasized that the victims will receive help after calculation was made of the impact of the earthquake.

Death toll in the powerful earthquake rose from 37 at 1:13 a.m. local time to 82 at 2:30 a.m. local time on Monday, while thousands others were urged to evacuate.

National Disaster Management Agency Head of Information, Data, and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho noted in his message here on Monday that in addition to the several casualties, hundreds of people were injured and thousands of homes were damaged.

Nugroho said most victims died from being hit by the collapsed buildings.

Areas that bore the brunt of the devastating earthquake were the districts of North Lombok and East Lombok and Mataram City.

West Nusa Tenggara Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that of the 82 casualties, 65 were in North Lombok, nine in West Lombok, two in Central Lombok, four in Mataram City, and two in East Lombok.

It is estimated that the number of victims will continue to increase, but the extent of damage to the buildings is still being assessed.
