President directs police to help local govts tackle current issues

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked the National Police to support the work of local governments across Indonesia in dealing with current difficult situations arising from the recent global turmoil.

National Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that this was one of the directives issued by the President in his briefing to senior officers from the National Police Headquarters, regional police chiefs, as well as resort police chiefs from across Indonesia at the State Palace here on Friday.

“We (the police) will certainly carry out his (the President’s) directives and orders to support local governments, both districts, cities, and provinces amid this very difficult global situation,” he affirmed at a press conference after the briefing.

The police have been asked to take an active role in controlling food commodity prices and inflation, he informed.

In addition, he said that Widodo has ordered the National Police to continue to assist regional governments in overseeing various development projects across the country.

Furthermore, the President has asked the police to maintain security and stability in the community ahead of the 2024 General Elections, he added.

Hence, the police have been ordered to collaborate with the military and other government institutions, in accordance with their respective tasks.

Widodo has also asked the police to take firm action in matters that have the potential to cause disunity, polarization, and disruption in society.

Prabowo said that 559 high-ranking National Police officials, regional police chiefs, as well as resort police chiefs, were present in person at the briefing.

The briefing was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, and members of the National Police Commission.

During the briefing, the national police chief noted that public trust in the institution has currently declined due to recent incidents involving police personnel, such as the murder of Brigadier J, the Kanjuruhan Stadium stampede, as well as the involvement of Inspector General TM in drugs trade.
