Not every restaurant helped by delivery services during PPKM: PHRI

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Head of Indonesia’s Hotel and Restaurant Association Hariyadi Sukamdani unveiled on Tuesday that not every restaurant is helped by delivery services during the enforcement of emergency and level 4 public activity restrictions (PPKM Level 4).

“If the question is about whether or not entrepreneurs are helped by delivery services, well the answer is not always,” Sukamdani told ANTARA here.

Ever since the Emergency PPKM and PPKM Level 3 and 4 get enforced in several regions across Indonesia, restaurants has been relying on takeaway and delivery services.

“Sure, people who used to shop at a mall will end up using delivery, meaning that they have purchasing power. But for people with limited spending, there is no way they will use delivery services every day. On some days, they choose to cook at home,” Sukamdani explained. In addition, he said not every restaurant that has a dine-in business model has the capability to convert to the takeaway-delivery model.

“Pizza Hut, for instance, is not designed for online services, so now they are overwhelmed. It is a different case with PHD (Pizza Hut Delivery) that has, since the beginning, designed their business for online services,” Sukamdani added.

He also said the two services have their own market segments.

Sukamdani noted the difficulties in boosting purchasing power in the hotel and restaurant sectors. Having a regulation that dictates how visitors can enter these establishment by showing vaccine certificate does not matter, since people are not going anywhere as the PPKM Level 4 is implemented.

Even though PPKM policy has caused a decline in business, the restaurant services head hopes that the government continues conducting 3T (testing, tracing, treatment) to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
